Similar to Megasoma species from South America and the longhorn beetle- Titanus giganteus, Africa's Goliath Beetles are considered the largest insects in the world. There are a number of species from the forests of Africa, but they are all large and colorful.  Goliathus goliatus is the largest species, and has red to brown elytra (wing-covers).  Goliathus regius is also reported to get as large.  It's eastern cousin Goliathus orientalis is nearly as large but has black and white elytra patterns similar to the thorax markings of G.g.  Other insects Heteropteryx dilatata and the Giant Weta are also among the heaviest insects.
